Charlevoix's Round Lake was once packed full of two and three-masted schooners for decades after the channels were cut in 1869 and the economy of this region exploded. They were the main link in the commercial maritime chain that connected Charlevoix to the rest of the state and country. Equally picturesque, beginning in the late 19th century, were the huge palatial yachts that once graced our harbor as our reputation as a summer mecca grew, until WWII caught up most of them for conversion to the war effort and they disappeared from the scene, never to return again.
