Since the first small hotel appeared here in 1867, Charlevoix's reputation as a place to come for both business and pleasure began to spread around the state, then the country, and now the world. The town soon gained a reputation as one of the premier resort destinations of America's Midwest, reachable first by boat, then train, then automobile. This program traces the rise of the grande dame hotels, some of the smaller ones, some famous names who stayed in them, and how the hotel/motel sector of the economy transformed into what it is today.
